The INTAN Junior Chambers International ladies are back with their 2nd Flea-Tastic Bazaar! In conjunction with the upcoming Christmas celebration, Flea-Tastic Bazaar is expected to offer more fun and excitement as more activities for both adults and children are lined up for the whole day event. It will be held on 20th December 2009, Sunday at the foyer of Wisma Tun Fuad Stephens, beginning from 9am-6pm. Entrance is opened to the public and admission as well as parking is free.
This first of its kind indoor flea-market meets garage sale-styled bazaar in Kota Kinabalu, is a continuation from the success of the first bazaar which was held recently at the multipurpose hall of a famous apartment residential area.
With the Christmas spirit of giving back in mind, the main purpose of this bazaar is to build-up on the existing fund which goes towards providing the children at The Toboh Children’s Home for the Needy in Tambunan, Sabah with basic necessities such as toiletries and hopefully, to furnish their kitchen and toilet which are currently under renovation and needing desperate funding. So far, a total of RM 2,000.00 has already been collected from sales proceeds of donated pre-loved items during the first bazaar. “We expect to raise at least RM2,000.00 more this time, and hopefully with the proceeds we will all be able to give the needy residents a special present for this coming Christmas and New Years”,
said Organizing Chairperson Lisa Ambrose. Members of public who would like contribute to this worthy cause can donate their various second hand items, be it books, toys, home wares or clothings which are in sellable conditions. “We are killing 2 birds with 1 stone; we contribute towards society and practise 3R ( Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) all at the same time” Lisa enthused.
She added, “At the first bazaar, 14 vendors took part, selling various pre-loved and brand new items such as branded clothings, bags, shoes, books, food and more. The public seemed to enjoy such shopping experience and thought that incorporating the charity element to it is a marvelous idea. Encouraged by overwhelming feedback, we expect more than 25 vendors the second time around with more unique and interesting things to sell, all in the name of fun, charity and spirit of festivities.” Visitors can expect to see more craft, food, second hand books, toys, brand new clothing, make-up and accessories.
It was estimated that a total 300 visitors turned up to support the first bazaar. Visitors during this second Christmas Edition Flea-Tastic bazaar can just not shop, but also be entertained by performances from local upcoming artists and a magic show which is also in the pipeline.
The organizing committee expresses their sincere appreciation for the generosity and support of the sponsors during the first Flea-tastic Bazaar, namely The W Group for the venue, Kids for Christ Group, who donated RM250 from their piggy bank savings and, Sabah Polo Association who helped ease our administration cost and individuals who donated their second hand items. This time around, we are grateful to the management of Wisma Tun Fuad Stephens, Asal Baru Sdn. Bhd. for being the venue sponsor.

The Home is located in Tambunan, some 80 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu City.
Currently there are 68 children in the home who come from broken families, are victims of rape and incest, hard core poor families and orphans. Entry to the home requires recommendation from The Sabah Welfare Department and the local Christian Community.
The home is currently managed by Sr. Rose Ginibun and supported by the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (FSIC) who provides them with pastoral care and kindergarten education. The children enters the home sometimes as toddlers and stay until they complete their secondary education. Most of them will come back to the home to help in teaching the younger children and some other ways.
It is saddening to learn that the childrens' daily menu is
usually 'rice with a table spoon of mashed sardines' or 'rice with a slice of luncheon meat/ spam'. Although the children are content with this, the inexistence of nutritious unprocessed food, meat, egg, vegetables, milk and fruits is not right for their general well-being. Sometimes, they get public donations of food but sadly they are non edible food, eg expired nuggets, bombed fishes and even bones and chicken feet. The quantity looks big but it is of no use.
The Home, that has been around since the 1970's has relied heavily on public donation to maintain the premise and providing them with basic necessities such as toilettries and stationeries. The home has become a little rundown and needs serious maintenance and upgrading at the current moment. With 68 children at the home, the kitchen that currently has 2 stoves, 1 rice
cooker and water filter only looks battered and does not do justice to the
number of children. Tiles and ceilings have come off and if left unmaintained
will pose a hazardous threat and breed numerous hygienic problems.
With your support, we are confident that we could start off by providing them with more basic kitchen utilities, along with toilettries and stationeries that will hopefully ease some burden off them. There are many ways you and I can help, and it doesn't have to be in great means. Monetary donations, big or small is always welcome.
But if you have unwanted items in usable and sellable condition such as ;
….. donate them to the Flea-tastic Bazaar “GiveBack Stall” and these unwanteds will turn into cash and God willing, will feed a child or two.
" If
you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one" Mother Teresa.
